About

よろしく I’m Jhenn and welcome to RONIN Dining!
A website for celebrating Japanese cuisine, supper clubs and catering.

In the Before Times, I was running Japanese supper clubs, private catering, classes and more in London since 2011. Now I am pivoting into having supper clubs to-go with bento boxes in Surrey!

“You opened my eyes to how delicious vegan cuisine can be.”- Hannah

Let me feed you:

In 2017 & 2018 I was selected as a Top Ten non-Japanese, Japanese Chef in Europe (and invited in 2019) by the Japanese government’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF). I also received from MAFF the Bronze Certification to cook traditional Japanese food to exceptional standards outside of Japan. I want these dishes to bring you the hidden flavours only your Japanese granny can make.

My Background:

vegan /ˈviː.ɡən/ — adj. the act of omitting eating and using all animal products

ronin /ˈrəʊnɪn/ — n 1. a lordless samurai 2. without a master

Born from the 2006 food blog The Vegan Ronin while I was living in rural Japan, I moved to London from Ohio and became one of the few people doing supper clubs in 2011.

Who: I worked professionally since 2005 as a chef in various kitchens while private catering in my off hours. Titles have included: Head chef, Sous Chef, Chocolatier, Cake Baker & Decorator, Raw Chef, Product Developer and Restaurant Consultant.

What: The Vegan Ronin blog originally focused on creating vegan food organically and creatively. It’s about empowering you to make your own food choices. And if you’re not into cooking, this is the place to experiment!

When: I’ve been vegan since 2001 and The Vegan Ronin food blog was started in 2006 as a way of documenting cooking and being vegan in Japan. Since then it has evolved with me becoming a chef, posting recipes and vegan-related events.

Where: I started Choco-A-Go-Go, an artisan vegan chocolate company, in 2005 originally based in Ohio.  I lived in Japan originally in 2002 (Osaka/Kyoto), and returned in 2006 working and cooking on and off until 2009 (Mie Prefecture). In 2010 I moved to London, UK and started the Vegan Ronin Supper Club in 2011. Due to the pandemic, current take-aways are based in Godalming, Surrey.

Why: I love cooking and studying Japanese food. I can’t help myself. I want to feed you exciting new flavours!

  1. Just happened across your blog and I’m glad I did.

I’ve recently moved to Japan for a study abroad exchange program and would love to eat vegan when I’m at home (when I’m out, I’ll eat anything, so I’m not true vegan) but 1.) I don’t fancy myself a good cook, and 2.) I’m in a whole different country, with a whole different language and writing system.

Still, I figured it could be done and lo and behold, I found you! So here’s an early thanks:

    どうもありがとう、
